Located between Lille Grand Palais and the Regional Council, in the 3rd business district of France, and initially envisioned/forseen as part of Lille’s bid to host the European Medicines Agency, the 30,000 m² Biotope project will endly host 2700 elected agents of Lille European Metropolis on 7 floors.
Like Alto tower in La Défense (Courbevoie, France), the energy-efficient building fulfills the most requiring environmental standards : BREEAM Excellent and Well Gold certifications for the indoor air quality and the well-being of the occupants, the E + C- label for the building energy performance and its low carbon footprint, Biodivercity label for excellence in respect and development of local biodiversity and Wiredscored label for the low impact of connectivity.
As part of its customer’s ventilation package, F2A manufactured and supplied RRVS and RCVS variable air volume dampers controlled by C0² sensors. BIM : the first template for REVIT21 November 2019
BIM ! F2A innovates and creates the event by launching the first textile duct template for REVIT !
Contractors need from manufacturers to provide not only geometric information, but also structured and reliable data for the design, construction and operation of a building.
F2A innovates by launching for the first time on the French market a template of textile ducts. The REVIT template combines all F2A parts of textile ducts for quick and easy use in a project. Circular ducts as well as the connection accessories (elbow, reduction, T-piece, …) can be parameterized with a single click in REVIT but also fixing systems, by cables or rails . Drawing complex ductwork is no longer a constraint.
F2A textile ducts family in REVIT enable to design an optimized distribution system fitted to your projects.

The Budapest Metro14 November 2019
Renovation of Line 3 of the Budapest Metro from North to South !
Line 3 of the Budapest metro, true spine for connecting the northern and southern parts of the Pest side, was in need of major renovations. With a length of more than 17 kilometers and more than 500,000 passengers in working days, it is the largest railway network in Hungary.
One city goal : increase safety and comfort of users.
It is in this context that F2A has been able to bring from 2018 all its expertise in tunnels and metros by supplying 2200 BD splitters for the North section inaugurated in April 2019 and another 1600 for the southern section which renovation is still in progress for a commissioning planned for 2020.

The Alto Tower, serial technical challenges in the heart of the business district of La Défense !
The Alto Tower project is part of the 4 Saisons district renovation.
The glass scale of its surface will consist of 17 500 m2 of double insulating skin.
Launched in September 2016, the building site of the 51,000 m² tower with 38 floors and 2 large terraces (including a VIP one) offers today an extraordinary flared shape, from 700 m² at the base to 1,900 m² at the top .
Being “perfect” in terms of environmental performance is Alto’s successful bet.
By aiming the highest levels of certification, HQE® Exceptionnel, Wellcore shell silver level and BREEAM®, level OUTSTANDING Alto will be one of the most energy efficient with its insulating facade and huge work in HVAC.
The construction site is an example, as architects and builders had to adjust the building design to the structures already there on one hand and the low noise levels required by the project management team on the other hand.
With 2 goals :
- Reduce the external noise level generated by the 76 Air Handling Units, chillers and exhaust fans, thereby protect the First Tower (La Défense’s icon and one of the most emblematic buildings) in close proximity.
- Optimize the comfort of future occupants and visitors to the tower, especially the coming Skylounge space (VIP).
All the expertise of the F2A acoustic research department has very accurately certified calculation notes of the silencers to be installed on the Air Handling Units floors of offices, annexes, future sports hall as well as the parking fans.
For an optimized solution to reduce the noise inherent in an Air Handling Units, our acoustic engineers have specified acoustic splitters and silencers BS + and BD and provided technical assistance throughout the study and execution phase.
Finally, an acoustic 3D mapping was carried out for the verification of the equipment impact located on technical terraces of the VIP outdoor space thus validating the noise levels required by the project management team Cap Horn.Contact us if you want to know more.
Indoor air quality from kindergarten to high school !10 October 2019
The Elabe-Veolia survey, carried out on September 3rd and 4th, still highlight it, 9 out of 10 French people find a direct link between the Indoor Air Quality of schools and the health of students.
A diagnosis IAQ is mandatory in french nursery, kindergartens and preschools since January 1st, 2018 and will also become compulsory for middle-school and high schools from the 1st January 2020.
At a time when indoor air quality is becoming everyone’s concern, F2A offers simple and effective solutions to improve air quality in public buildings, especially schools.

Today BIM&CO international collaborative platform organize its first day of exchanges for contractors and building product manufacturers to structure and distribute their data to all AEC players devoted to building process improvement to each step of the construction site.

Contractors need from manufacturers not only geometrical information but also structured and reliable data for the design, the construction and the operation stages of a building. Traffic can reach up to 200 000 vehicles a day in a road tunnel and the safety of users is a major issue. A fire taking place in a tunnel can have awful consequences.
The same risks with the same consequences can occur also in a metro carrying passengers.
Acoustic in tunnels is the other main issue to handle in regards to both users and neighbours.

In order to accelerate its growth and development, F2A is investing in the improvement of its production tool.
The acoustic activity of the F2A plant (ELYT3 in Béligneux) is moving to a new production site in Dagneux near our commercial offices.
This new site, completely renovated, will allow us to double our production area and significantly increase our production capacity. In addition, we will have loading and unloading platforms that will improve our flow, and the circulation of delivery trucks will also be greatly facilitated.

Splitters with external membrane, 4 questions to the expert François Fohr12 July 2017
1) You have performed comparative tests between standard acoustic splitters and external membrane splitters. Can you first enlighten us on their respective conceptions?
The standard splitters consists of a simple plate of fibrous material of a certain thickness placed in the direction of the air flow. The two faces of the plate constitute acoustic absorbers which make it possible to attenuate the noise transmitted in the ventilation duct. The complete silencer consists of a set of parallel splitters and its efficiency depends on the thickness of the splitters and their spacing (airways). Generally, these devices make it possible to achieve very good attenuations in the medium and high frequencies bu are poorly suited to low frequency treatment.
The external membrane splitter is presented as a solution to compensate for this performance deficit in the low frequencies but it turns out that it is quite little verified in practice. Its design is based on the addition of a metal plate concealing half of each side of the splitter, these plates being placed in staggered rows. By design, this principle deprives the splitter of half of its absorbent surface, which is reflected in the performance measured in the medium and high frequencies. In the field of low frequencies, the performances are very dependent on the spacing between the splitters (ariways). It is only for very small spacings that the performances really become superior to the classic splitters. But this concerns implementation conditions that are very unfavorable from the aeraulic point of view since they are accompanied by high pressure losses.
2) What types of measures have been taken and on what type of equipment?
The different test campaigns that we have been able to carry out on these two types of splitters have been conducted on a test bench complying with the recommendations of he ISO 7235 standard which is the reference in this field. In addition, for the very particular low frequency domain, we have also carried out additional measures to overcome the high uncertainties of the standardized method. These complementary methodologies have been published in particular in the journal “Acoustique et Techniques”.
3) What are your conclusions?
Based on the comparative measurements we have made and the understanding we have of the acoustic principles involved, it is quite clear that external membrane splitters do not represent a truly effective solution for improving the attenuation of low frequencies. As they also lose some of their efficiency in medium and high frequencies, the balance is rather negative.
4) Is there a real solution to attenuate the low frequencies?
Today, there is no specific solution to the problem of low frequencies. In practice, the only option is to use thick splitters installed in large silencers so as to preserve a passage of air sufficient from an aeraulic point of view.

Oil & Gas rigs house a lot of highly combustible chemicals and gas, which means there is a high risk of fire or gas explosion. These kinds of incidents happen suddenly and often without warning. It is important to be ready by having all possible preventive measures in place.

Smoke extraction: Regulation point23 June 2017
The current European standard EN 12101-8 specifies the basic performance and requirements for smoke extraction dampers to be used with pressure differential systems and smoke and heat control systems.
The product standard EN 12101-8 is supplemented by two other standards defining the tests and classification of smoke extraction systems.
- EN 1366-10: fire resistance tests
- EN 13501-4: fire resistance rating
The smoke extraction damper is subjected to extensive tests of mechanical strength and leak-tightness at several temperatures and pressures to determine its classification.
Unlike the multi-compartment application (extraction or ducts serving several compartments), the “Mono-compartment” application, extraction or flue extraction line is directly connected to the outside without being in contact with another compartment.
The new MSD-F register meets European requirements for single-compartment smoke extraction applications.
The MSD-F is equipped with an all-or-nothing actuator protected by a thermal jacket. It can be installed vertically or horizontally, as a wall or as a recess. The smoke exhaust damper MSD-F meets the requirements of a CE marking.

A smoke exhaust damper is an automatic or manual ddevice which can be opened or closed in an operational position, allowing control of the flow of smoke and hot gases to, from or into the ductwork.
Smoke control systems are designed to fulfill the following functions:
- Extraction of smoke from a single compartment to the outside of the building
- Extraction of smoke from fire compartments of a building, using a smoke evacuation system and heat
In accordance with the EN 12101-8 product standard for smoke extraction dampers, all fire protection solutions must now meet specific criteria and be CE marked.

New airtight circular sleeve MCE08 June 2017
The airtightness of ventilation systems has become a major building issue in recent yeas. In effect, the airtightness problem inevitably leads to loss of efficiency, overconsumption, poor energy performance and therefore additional costs and sometimes degraded indoor air quality.

Frost issue in heat exchangers08 March 2017
The formation of frost in air-to-air heat exchangers is a persistent issue in locations with temperatures below -5°C. Condensation occurs when some of the transfer surfaces temperature drops below the dew point of the warm airstream, and this condensation turns to ice which causes the heat exchanger to consume energy. This happens as a result of the ice formation reducing the air section and increasing pressure loss, so there are more consumptions from fans.
Depending on the temperature of the air supply, humidity of exhaust air, and the efficiency of the heat exchanger the rate at which frost will accumulate will vary. In regions with persistent freezing temperatures or no fluctuation in temperature above freezing airflow can stop completely after frost or ice formation. Between countries, there are different ways of dealing with ice formation: shutting-off fresh air inlet or by-passing the heat exchanger. In one case the ventilation recycles stale air over and over (bad Indoor Air Quality) and in the other it stops recovering the heat from return air.
A classic issue in cold climate is to over-heat or shut down the ventilation function to prevent frosting, but this goes against performance and air quality requirements. However, F2A, a French leading company in ventilation and heat exchanging technology, is developing an innovation to solve this issue with their next generation of heat exchangers.
The patented solution will operate with integrated bypass, anti-frost functions, and alternate between different flow techniques to achieve unique performance.

EUROMÉDITERRANÉE: an urban regeneration project in Marseille city center09 February 2017
launched by the French government and various local authorities (Ville de Marseille, PACA regional council etc.) in 1995. This huge 1,200-acre project is part of a global repositioning of the city’s image within the international landscape of dynamic cities.
One of its many architectural projects is the EUROMED CENTER, a 70,000 sq. metre complex of offices, shops, multi-screen cinema, 4-star hotel, park and car park. EUROMED CENTER will house the first office blocks with High Quality Environmental and BBC (low energy building) certification.
Our acoustics department carried out studies for the 846-space car park, the 210-room, 4-star “Golden Tulip” hotel and the 48,000 sq. metres of office space. We then proposed F2A solutions that met all the project’s different requirements.
• For the car park the 24 ventilators required, which have an output of 7,200m3/h to 96,300m3/h, inevitably generate noise pollution. It was therefore recommended that an acoustics study be carried out to find solutions to reduce noise pollution. For this type of use, the splitters provided must also comply with smoke control requirements.
• The 4 office blocks are fitted with 7 air handling units (AHUs) with an output of 3,700m³/h to 14,000m³/h. The NF S31-080 standard sets out the acoustic requirements that must be met for this type of building – 30 to 62 dB(A) according to the type of office and the overall noise level required. Our acoustics experts also had to respect the NR35 noise rating of 40 dB(A) maximum.
• The hotel has 9 AHUs with outputs of up to 22,000m³/h, as well as a heat pump for its swimming pool and an extractor. The acoustic requirements set by the standard and acoustic instructions are NR25 limited to 30 dB(A). The fan coil units in the hotel bedrooms were dealt with specifically as certain objectives had to be met (installation of sound traps).
We carried out pre-acceptance tests on every building and the acoustic design office in charge of the project carried out the final measurements which confirmed the efficiency of our solutions and the precision of our calculations.
The second highest tower in Marseille, the “Marseillaise” tower, designed by Jean Nouvel’s architecture agency, is also currently undergoing studies for the supply of splitters. The project is due to be delivered in mid 2018.Contact us if you want to know more.
